THREE DECAMERON TALES

Warning: Some of these tales are not for the bashful ! ) - REPOST

THE NEGLECTED WIFE:

Girls from poor households cannot afford to have all their dreams fulfilled. My parents cannot give any dowries. But t hey have to marry me off somehow ! So what happens? They look for a rich guy who does not need a dowry and this old guy came forward. Here I was a 18 year old girl getting married to this old guy . His age ? I don’t know. 50? 60 ? May be. Yes, we got married this morning. Tonight is our wedding night. All my friends make the usual jokes and I am let inside the room where my husband is waiting for me .

I am afraid of what is going to happen. I have been told all types of tales. But I am also curious. I look at my husband who seems to be half asleep. I go and sit on the cot and wait for him to say something. After few minutes he does wake up. He says “ I am sorry dear but this may pain you . But I have to consummate the marriage “. He gets on top of me and before I know what is happening he has dismounted also. He says he is tired and he needs to sleep. I also sleep but I wonder whether what had to be done has been done.

When my friends ask me in the morning, I make up some story. We all laugh and have fun but I am thinking of what will happen tonight. I enter our bedroom with anxiety. I hope it will be a fun night. But my husband seems to have some other plans. He tells me that today is All Saints Day and we have to keep ourself pure. He says that we should keep thinking of holy things . He adds “ No carnal knowledge today for us , dear” and goes to sleep. But I don’t know about these holy days. My father is poor. He works on all days . Yes, even on days which are holy.

Well, I look forward to the third night. May be this is the night when things will happen to me. My husband did approach me with what looked like passion and mounted me. But it was all over just like on the first night. He said he is tired and he has to sleep. And the next day was St Nicholas Day . We observed it with all piety . As we got into our bed, my husband reminded me that it is a holy day and we should not indulge in any passion. He added this would amount to sin.

My married life has gone into a pattern now. My husband finds various holy occasions for us not to do what healthy married people do. He will say that this is Saint Michael’s night and so we should not indulge in passion. On another night it is Saint Patrick’s day and no carnal knowledge on that night also. These are what he calls holidays for passion . I never knew so many saints existed. If he cannot think of any saint, he will say today is holy because our saviour did this or did that.

Of course, once in a while he does get on top of me. He makes all types of sounds and before I could count to 10 it is all over. Sometimes I try to count very fast but it does not help. He is faster than me and once I had not even gone beyond zero when it happened. Everybody thinks we are doing well. My husband Ricardo has given me good clothes. He gives me many presents. But he is not giving me what I really need. He takes too many holidays from the work he has to do with me. He is also very jealous. He makes sure that young men come nowhere near me.

We were in this state of affairs when he decided to take me on a sea voyage. We went to a coastal town and undertook several small sea trips. But calamity struck us on a windy night. While we wanted to be near the sea there were fierce winds which took our ship away from the coast. In the middle of this tempest, we were attacked by a pirate boat and the pirates looted us totally. As they were leaving our ship, the captain of the pirates took a look at us and decided to take me also. My husband was in tears and begged the pirate who looked very enamoured of me and did not want to let me go. I was crying but had no option as I was taken to the pirate boat. The boat was put in motion again and it looked like it would go to the high seas . As the boat moved away I felt sorry for my crying husband.

The captain of the pirates, called Paganino, looked like a nice person but I was scared of him. As the boat docked into a small town, I was also asked to come to the town and rest for few days. He and his men were all drinking and enjoying in the inn where we were staying. I did not want join them. As the evening was drawing to a close , Paganino opened the door of my room and walked in. I was scared but he calmed with soothing words. I was really nor ready for it when he started kissing me. I knew it was Saint Mathew’s day and therefore nothing would happen to me. As Paganino removed my clothes, I went on telling him about how holy the day was and that we should not indulge in our passion. He kept on laughing and put off the lights. As he mounted me I started counting. I kept counting and counting and he was still within me. I had really lost track of all numbers by the time he finally got off me. It was wonder of wonders. There were two big surprises for me. The first was I had to use my fingers many times to count before it happened and the second was that it did not matter to him how holy the day was ! ( The writer would like to assure the reader that he is not straying too far from the original which reads “ ..Every saint’s day and holiday went out of her head..” )

From that day onwards I was a changed person. The Pirate ( That was what I call Paganino) and I had become close. I was living most happily with him and forgot all about my old husband. Then it happened. We were in Monaco when I saw my husband from a distance looking at me. I told the Pirate about it and he asked me not to worry. As I expected, Ricardo, that is my husband , came to our place. I could hear him talking to Paganino who later came to me and asked me to meet Ricardo. I told him I was not interested but Paganino insisted that I meet him.

Ricardo came into my room and started sobbing. He told me that it took him a long time to find me and how he has missed me . I acted as though I did not know him. I got angry when he said that I should come back with him.

(Let us revert to the original to hear what the lady has to say)” … I was a young, fresh, vigorous girl and you should have known that young women require something else besides food and clothes although they are too modest to say so. .. If you had given as many holidays to the peasants on your land as you gave the worker who should have ploughed my little field , you would not have reaped a grain of wheat…God has beheld my youth with pity and has allowed me to meet a man with whom I lie in this room where nothing is known of holidays.. we work and beat our wool day and night ..I intend to remain with him .. and I will keep saint’s days only when I am old. …”. When Ricardo started insisting I got angry and told him that I would scream. He left murmuring that the vile thief has no holidays!

Well, that is my story, After what happened Paganino learnt that I really love him and we became husband and wife. And as the story teller says “ ..They worked together and enjoyed themselves , without ever observing saint’s days or vigil or Lent”

THE CLEVER SERVANT: ::

I am a groom in the royal stables. My work is to clean the horses and keep them ready for the royal family. There is the king and he has his own groom. The princes also have their own grooms. But I have got this great job of being the groom for the queen. She is so beautiful and I am so lucky to serve her. When she mounts the horse , she touches me at times. Sometimes I have to hold her feet in my hands. At times she smiles at me. Those are difficult moments for me. Only fear of death stops me from touching her and embracing her.

It is becoming very difficult for me to contain my passion. What do I do ? I have to enjoy her somehow. I have to observe what the king does and hopefully imitate him. I very rarely see the king and queen together except in the royal court. They do not sit together and chat like other husbands and wives. She is kind of young for him and may be they do not have much in common.

I notice that the king comes to the queen’s apartments once in few nights . For other nights, I think he has concubines and people say that he sleeps with young boys too. After watching him for more time, I find that he comes in on Wednesdays and Saturdays. Poor queen !, I do not know what she does to keep herself happy on other nights. May be she sleeps with other women too ! Another thing I see is that there is no light at all in her rooms at that time. I think she lies in dark waiting for him to come. He comes in at midnight and leaves after two hours. I do not know what else they do. I go outside the apartment and try to find out what happens. God, they do not even talk ! But I hear sounds and sounds. And then the whole thing stops and the king steps out . Is that fun ? I do not know but I have to have her .

Well, I just decide to imitate the king. I watch the queen’s quarters. He did not come in on Wednesday. It is Saturday and he has not gone for his hunt. That means he will come to visit his queen today. I see her in the morning. She is joking with her maids and I am sure she is looking forward to have her fun with her husband.

I take a bath and make sure that I don’t smell. I am of the same height and build as the king. I have seen him with a cloak on his shoulders. At nine in the night it is dark everywhere. I put on a cloak and go to the queen’s apartment. I knock on her doors . As soon as a maid opens the door I just sail in without talking. I go to the queen’s bed , remove all my clothes and get in with her under the sheets. I can feel that she is happy to receive me. I don’t make any sound , kiss her and mount her. She laughs and says what is the hurry. But I do not talk. Well, I think she had missed her husband very much . She is very eager for my embraces, keeps saying that it is good, even better than before. I just do not talk and try to satisfy her . … Yes, she is satisfied but I do not stop. Yes, it goes on and on. But I also realize that I have to leave soon since the king is bound to come any minute. I get up from her and leave her as she is drifting on to a well contented sleep.

As I come out I hear heavy footsteps at a distance. I hide myself as the king goes in to the queen’s apartment. I am worried as to what will happen. I stand near the window and try to listen to their conversation. As soon as the king gets in , the queen asks with surprise “ what is the meaning of this visit. Just now you had lot of fun. You made me so happy tonight. Never have I been so happy… I do not mind you. But you should worry about your health. You have already done much more than what you usually do . Dear, please take care”. There is no sound at all for some time. Then I hear the king saying “ I am sure I can do more but I wont disturb you. Dear, go back to sleep”. As soon as the king comes out , I hear him say “ I have been duped. But the fellow is smart. I should find who it is. I better go to the groom’s quarters and find out. I am sure who ever has done all this much must have his heart pounding like crazy”.

As I hear him , I run to our quarters and lie down as though nothing has happened. I can hear the king come in. There are many of us and I see that the king is putting his hand on everybody’s chest to feel the heartbeat. I know that my heart is beating fast but what can I do. I cannot get up and go. As I lie waiting , the king comes and puts his hand on my chest too. My heart beats faster now. The king looks around and takes his sword out. I am afraid he will kill me but all he does is to cut off my hair at the backside. And then the king leaves !

I now understand what has happened. The king will ask all grooms to assemble tomorrow and try to recognize the person by looking at the hair. And then he will send me to the gallows ! I am really scared stiff. Well that too ! I think hard . Yes, I do have an idea. I take the shears used for cutting horse’s hairs. I go around and cut the hair on each and every groom sleeping in the room. And then I sleep .

Well, it is morning and as I expected we are all asked to assemble it the courtyard. The king comes in. I can see he is quite angry. He sits on his throne and asks each groom to come and kneel in front of him. We obey his orders. We all finish our turns but he asks us to come and kneel again. I observe him from a distance. His anger slowly turns into a smile. And then he addresses us: Something happened last night . Only two people know about it here. Whoever did it is a smart fellow but let him not repeat it” .

The king was magnanimous in his humiliation. The queen’s maids tell me that she keeps on remembering that early night when the king (according to her ) was really very entertaining ! And, as for me, I march forward in my life with memories of that sweet night with the beautiful queen!

THE DUMB GARDENER:

My name is Masetto. I am a peasant . Nobody can make enough money in the village. My father’s friend is a gardener in a convent just outside town of Sienna. As he is getting old he wants somebody to take his place in the convent. I go to him but he is afraid that the Abbess (The chief nun) many not allow me to work there. The problem is that I am just 21 and yes, very handsome. And it is a convent with young nuns ! But I need the job and the old gardener thinks I am well suited for it,. We sit and discuss to see how it can be done. We decide that I should act like a deaf and mute person. I should also look very impoverished (which I am ) so that the Abbess takes pity on me.

The old gardener takes me inside the convent and introduces me to the Abbess. She is reluctant at first but the gardener convinces her by saying that the nuns cannot flirt and joke with me since I am a deaf mute person. I start to work and the old gardener goes away. There are eight nuns in the convent and all are quite young. Two of them are very young, may be my age or even younger. They all keep staring at me . And they make all types of jokes. I never knew that nuns could talk like that !

It was a hot afternoon and I was taking a nap after having worked very hard in the garden in the morning. All of a sudden I felt a smooth hand touch my shoulders. I saw it was one of the two very young nuns who have been looking at me rather strangely for the last week. She asked me to follow her and we went to this small alcove at the edge of the garden. When I went inside I saw the other nun was seated there. Then they made me sit on the bench and started talking to each other.

The nun who brought me with her tried to convince the other nun that they should lie with me : “ I have heard that all the pleasures of the world are hollow compared to what a woman feels with a man”. She went on in that mode for several minutes that the second nun agreed. They felt that nobody will know about it since I will not be able to divulge the secret . The bolder one first one decided to be the first to lie with me also and asked the other one to wait outside and signal if she sees anybody . Now I will let the original text speak : Masetto did what she wanted without waiting for an invitation. ..Then she gave place to her companion .. Afterwards when they talked about it, they agreed that it was even more pleasant than they had heard..

It happened that one after noon another nun saw what we were doing and came to us saying that she will denounce us to the chief nun. However, she relented after the other two convinced her to lie with me.

So, a week ago I had nobody and now I had three ladies to enjoy. I knew this would not stop here. Slowly all the other nuns came to know about it and they all decided to have a piece of the action.

My days and nights were full with such activity . It is no wonder that I was falling asleep quite often in the day. When I was taking one such nap I was woken up by a heavy hand on my shoulder. When I woke up I saw it was the abbess smiling and pulling my hand. She took me to her quarters and enjoyed me there for three days. The nuns were complaining that I am not doing any gardening but they did not dare to oppose their chief. Once in a while when I was let out I had to satisfy the other nuns also. It became more and more strenuous for me . When I was with the abbess one night ,I blurted out “ I have to satisfy nine women and cannot go on much longer ….. You must either let me go or find some remedy “. The abbess was wonderstruck and agreed when I suggested it was a miracle. And then she asked me about the other women and I had to tell her the whole story. She seemed angry initially but realized that she could not blame others without her partaking of blame also. They all came to some agreement to share me. It was also let out that I had gotten my voice and hearing back by the constant prayers of the nuns of the convent. Massetto went on working in the garden of the convent for years and years till he got old.

(Decameron, written by Giovanni Boccacio, is a world classic. It was written in 14th century Italy. It has 10 chapters and each chapter has 10 stories. The author portrays the time of Black Death when plague visited most of Europe and supposedly took away half its citizens. Ten young people, both men and women, are together in a place outside the town of Florence. Each one is asked to tell a tale depending on the theme of the day. The tales have become immortal along with similar classics like the Canterbury Tales by Chaucer and the Arabian Nights. . Some of the tales are very long, and some very short. There are tales of great love, of adultery, of chicanery. Some are tragic and some are ribald. For some, one needs to know the times but most of them have retained their attraction to the present times. The language is quite bawdy reminding us of the times when modesty had yet to enter the world. It also gives a look into the beginning of the renaissance in Italy. These are my own renderings and may not do much justice to the original. Please read on and if it triggers you to pick up the original, I would have paid my dues to the master story teller since the stories have made me cheerful at sad times ! I have an old LAUREL publication but I have seen some nice hardbound books with illustrations too.)

SHEHERZADE'S LAST STORY

I make a living out of telling stories. It is literally true since I will be killed unless I keep on telling stories. I have to think of how to end the story I started last night. But I cannot afford to just end the story. A new story has to be begun so that my husband will continue to be interested in me. Otherwise he will cut me into pieces ! I have to do all this while the he lies on top of me. A new story has to take its birth in me as I wish that his seed does not germinate into a new baby.. He groans and I moan. This is the sign for my sister Duny (actually her name is Dunizyad) to come and ask me to continue the last night’s story.

My poor sister ! I don’t think she sleeps at all. She has to listen to all the sounds her brother in law and I make. At first she was curious abut it all but now kind of blasé about it ! Those first nights she used to sleep below our cot. As you probably know, royal cots are very high . My husband and I have to climb a ladder to get into our beds. The beds are really great, but this ladder business gets to me. I guess this is the price one pays for being royalty. They call it security. Nobody should come and cut our throats off in the night, Is’nt it ? As for Duny, she now sleeps outside our room. She used to knock on the door but we have all become too informal l. She is all ears and knows when to come in and pop her question . I hope seeing us locked (literally ) in holy matrimony does not spoil men for her ! I want a good life for her. We are so fond of each other. She also helps me out a lot when I

I remember a story in which she helped me a lot. It was about a poor and honest man who finds a big treasure stored by a band of thieves in a cave. I made him go several times to the cave and load the treasure on his donkey. But I could not go on doing this for ever. Even my not so bright husband will think I am just delaying. Something had to happen. I could not let the honest man die. It is actually Duny who helped me to create another character, his brother who is rich but cruel and avaricious . Of course , I should also mention the great contribution made my husband. We had made the number of thieves to be 39 but my Lord and Master insisted it should be 40. We had no other choice. And so it became Ali Baba and Forty thieves.

I am yet to tell you why I have to keep on telling stories to my husband. You must be curious since I also told you that he will cut me into pieces. Well here is my tale. My husband is the Emperor of Persia . He is the Shah ! It seems he loved his wife – the one in the beginning – very much. He found that she was regularly visiting some lover. So he took his sword and cut her into pieces. Yes, Horrible , Is it not ? Then he decided to marry again. He wanted the choicest virgin in the land. Marriage is celebrated with all pomp and circumstance. And in the night he lies with her. I am sure they had fun alright. But with dawn he takes his new wife to the big courtyard in the palace and cuts her into pieces. When his Vazir, a kind old man , asked the reason all that the Shah said was that women are an unfaithful lot.

I can go into a tirade ! Actualy I did scream when I first heard about it from my father. What does he mean by saying all women are unfaithful ? May be some women like more than one man. Is it so bad ? What about men themselves ? Can they keep on having wives, concubines , mistresses, Etc, etc.. ? My father reminded me that he is the Shah and he can do jolly well whatever he wants . As for me, he told me that I am just a vazir’s daughter and better not babble too much . Babble , he called it. Yes, if a woman opens her mouth to say something important, it becomes babble. If a man does it, it is praised as profound !

Well, after his dastardly act, the Shah summons his Vazir to fetch him another virgin. Poor father ! He found one , the Shah married her and then in the morning dispatched her to the beyond in the sky. It went on and on. All the young girls in the land started disappearing. At times even not so young girls had the same fate. May be some of them were not virgins. Poor father ! how is he to know about it ? And , as for the king, there are ways to deceive bridegrooms into believing they were the first( Please refer to some of my stories where such incidents are narrated). Finally, father comes to us one day and bids us good bye since he could not locate any more virgins for the king. He was sure that the king would get mighty angry and cut him into pieces.

That is the time when I stepped into the picture. I told my father to present me as the next victim. He refused initially but he reluctantly agreed later. My sister started crying but I told her my plans. I told her that I will appeal to the child in this barbarous king who was to become my husband. I will start a story but will take my own time in ending it. That will buy me several nights. And as the first story is getting over, I make sure I start another story which will keep my husband curious . That will keep me alive. Duny worried that it may not last long. I told her let us try and we will see, I made her ask for the story after the king has his will of me. I tell the story till day break. It is the same thing every night, And every night .

Well, it has gone on for one thousand days now. I have somehow maintained to keep husband very curious of what would happen the next day. In between I have give him three children. But I don’t know what will happen tonight . I just cannot go on doing this. I want a normal life. Duny wants a normal life. We sleep during the day. Even my husband needs a normal life. At times he is found snoring when matters of state are discussed. Yes, this cannot go on for ever. And I start telling a new story hoping that it would be my last tale:

There are two kingdoms which are always fighting with each other. A fresh fight starts. Name of the kingdoms ? Anga and Vanga ! (The king intercepts asking to know whether the story is from Hindoostan. My Lord and Master is also now more aware of geography, history and what not. I even gave him a whole lesson on Anatomy . And about Sufi mystics. Well, I tell him that it is from Hindoostan. After all quite a few stories I have told him are from that land.) . The Anga kingdom is defeated. The Anga king and all the royalty die fighting. The only ones left are the Anga queen and the Anga princess. They flee into the forest. The Vanga king is worried as to the whereabouts of the Anga royalty. He decides to go into the forest to look for them . The prince accompanies him. As they keep walking, they see footprints. One is large and the other is small. They keep discussing about it and the father decides that the footprints must be of women. ( To the unitiated, the ratio of the sizes of the big toe to the small toe is very small in case of women. (My Lord, it means that women do not have large big toes. Wait, you can check it later. Let us proceed)). The father says he will marry the one with the big footprint and the prince can marry the other lady. Finally, they see these two royal Anga women. After some initial cajoling, the Anga ladies decide to marry the Vanga men. According to their pact earlier, the Anga king marries the Vanga princess and the Anga prince marries the Vanga queen. Anga and Vanga come together. Nine months after the royal marriage there is great festivity in the capital. The King gets a boy and the prince gets a girl.

I am interrupted by my Lord and Master. He says” Wait, my queen. Don’t go any further. Tell me what is the relationship between the two new children. Anga father marries Vanga daughter and gets a boy. Anga son marries Vanga mother and gets a girl. He has to be the ..” Now I start to smile. I decide to take the same escape route which the king in the original story from Hindoostan did.

I tell my husband that I do not know the answer and I cannot proceed till I figure it out. I also tell him to inform me if he can find the answer and then only we can go on to the next story . Well, my end did not come that day or even the next day since I could never finish the story.

Meanwhile we got Duny married to my husband’s brother. She is happy. My husband has become mellow. But I hear him once in while in the night saying Anga , Vanga,Vanga, Anga... We are all happy and I hope we will continue to do so till THE DESTROYER OF DELIGHTS comes to take us away !

( Note : All stories in THE ARABIAN NIGHTS end with the standard line - THEY LIVED HAPPILY TILL THE DESTROYER OF DELIGHTS CAME TO TAKE THEM AWAY
The last story told be the Persian Queen here is the same as the last story of Vikram -Betal. Betal asks this question and Vikram has no answer !) )

Thailand - Buddha and Massage Parlors

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

-- The Wats (Pagodas ) in the City Palace area in the western part of Bangkok. The walls of the Palace have scenes from Ramayana. Also there is a big shrine for ' Emerald Buddha'

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I should say that I was pretty ignorant about Thailand before going there. The movie KING AND I was a musical I had seen in my college days. It had Yul Brynner as the king of Siam and Deborah Kerr (the I) as the English governess employed by the king for his children. The film gave an impression that the country was very primitive and it changed with the arrival of the western lady ! Yes, Siam was the name of the country at that time and another reason we knew about it was that it was quite well known for its twins . And we knew that it was a Buddhist country. And that was about it.

While we went there from Singapore , there are direct flights from major Indian cities to Bangkok. The discount fares from most Indian cities to Banglkok are 8000 – 12000 rupees. The currency in Thailand is Baht and 100 Bahts are roughly equivalent to 120 rupees. The lodging in a middle class hotel (like the one in which we stayed ) costs about 2000 rupees.

When we landed at Bangkok airport, we were really surprised by how huge it was. We remembered reading somewhere that it was called a Newly Industrialized nation. However, the delays for the immigration procedure reminded us that we were still in a developing country.

------------------------------

The giant tableau at the airport - Devas an Asuras doing Amrit Manthan

-----------------------------------

And when we came out of the airport (called SUVARNA BHOOMI – Golden land ?) the roads leading to the city were very good., as good as the ones we had seen in Singapore. Once we got off the high ways, we were in a very familiar territory – MUMBAI – only that the inner roads are slightly cleaner than those in Mumbai. It certainly looked like a 3rd world country but with one foot in the first world

We had increased our knowledge of the country by reading an article on the aircraft. The word THAI has connotation of freedom. The country is of the size of France. Its major export is rice followed by textiles It seems that some point of time in the last century Thailand had the highest growth rate of all nations. Among the various ranking of nations, it is somewhere in the middle.

Thailand is a constitutional monarchy. The king is respected and really revered. He will be 80 next year. We reached on a Monday and saw many people wearing yellow shirts. When we asked about it we found out that it is a symbol of solidarity with the monarch. The military is often on the political scene since coups are quite common. The ex prime minister had just then stepped down on massive corruption charges. It can be very loosely termed as benevolent dictatorship.

.We were put in an inn in downtown Bangkok. The room was kind of small, but the people were nice. Of course, they did not speak English, or spoke very little. This is when man realizes that speech is not necessarily the sole mode of communication. As we will see Thais are omnivorous whereas some of us were strict vegetarians. Contrary to what it says in the bible, we did live by bread alone!

-----------------------------------------------------------------

-----------------------------------------------------

Bangkok is an extremely safe city. Quite a few people are on the streets in the night. There seem to be many buses but we did not take any of them. We did travel by trains (overhead) and they are relatively cheap. But trains do not connect all pats of the city as in say Singapore. There are equivalents of autorickshaws – called TukTUKs. Either they did not understand us or something else, some of them did take us for rides ! However people are very friendly and try to help. They do NAMSTEs more often than us. But the problem is that most of them do not know English . As for shopping, there is plenty. It looked like clothes etc are only slightly costlier than in India. But since we had limited time and finances, shopping was not on the top of our list.

Our first afternoon was in search of a Brahma shrine. Yes, Brahma is a revered deity here and many pray to him for prosperity. In a place called IRAWN shrine one can see the Brahma idol and worshippers with incense sticks, flowers etc.

However, Buddha is the main deity here. One cannot just miss him in this country. While countries like Japan and China have other religions also (Shinto, Confucianism etc) , the major religion is Buddhism here. Many streets have temples for Buddha and the idols are quite big. They follow Hinayana system here , like is Sri Lanka and Burma.

---------------------------------------

Golden Reclining Buddha in Wat Po - The idol is gigantic

Following is WAT ARUN : An Agkor Wat type of temple

------------------------------------

People are quite calm. And as I said earlier the place is safe, I guess these things come at least partially from the religion.

However, since Buddhism was an offshoot of Hinduism , there are lot of Hindu elements in the culture. As is well known they have their own version of Ramayana . The Kings are named after Rama. For eg one is told that RAMA V was responsible for many reforms in the country. I think the present one is called RAMA IX. The Hindu influence can be seen in many temples. They are called WATs here. Many Hindu figures like Garudas and Chinese figures like dragons etc coexist on the temple walls. The Bangkok airport has a huge tableau like thing where we can see Devas and Asuras are involved in AmritManthan (see airport pik)

One of the first things one notices is that there seem to be more women there than in many other countries. Most of the stores are run by women. Women handle tough jobs like driving the boats on clangs ( canals – Bankok was once called the Venice of the east) . They also stand on the edges of the boats and give tickets as can be seen in one of the pictures. . And last but not least they manage massage parlors (see pic, more on it later) .There are massage parlors everywhere. Even one's little toes can get massaged for not a whole lot of money !

As for the reasons for the position of women in the society, one can quote an article by Dr Devaraja , a Sinhalese sociologist. In an article ‘ The Position of Women in Buddhism ‘ she says that Buddhism has helped to better the position of women in Sri Lanka, Burma and Thailand. Apart from the fact that the Buddhist church was open to both men and women, Dr Devraja mentions another interesting aspect “ In all patriarchal societies the desire for male offspring is very strong and only a son could carry out the funeral rites of his father .. .The Buddhist funeral ceremony is a very simple one which could be performed by the widow, daughter or any one on the spot and the presence of a son is not compulsory”. Further, in Buddhism, marriage is purely a secular affair and the monks do not participate in it. However she hastens to add that masculine superiority exists in these societies also but tempered by Buddhist ideals.

While the position of women in these societies is certainly laudable, the sad aspect is that there is a large scale use of women as physical objects. Old western men accompanied by very young thai women is a very common sight in Bangkok. They act as companions for these men.. IAs a rather hard hitting article called Prostitution in Thailand and Southeast Asia ( I quote extensively from this article which is on the net ; from a course in Swarthmore univ: author not known) says that Thailand and the Philippines have recently stepped in to play the role of whorehouse to the world . While such practices were not unknown in the previous centuries, the sex boom in SE Asia started with the American presence in Vietnam. Thailand agreed to provide "rest and recreation" services to American servicemen during the Vietnam War, According to the article, the number of prostitutes which was 20,000 1957 increased to 400000 by 1964, after the United States established seven bases in the country, Is ironical that the official position on prostitution is that "prostitution does not exist because it is illegal” ,Ultimately, much of official complacency with prostitution is tied to the view of prostitutes as a national resource. Like in many developing countries, most of the girls are from rural areas and poor households and these jobs willingly since they pay very well. A couple of years of work by a girl would enable the family to build a big house in the countryside. As long as there are no other high-wage jobs available, women will continue to choose prostitution in Southeast Asia. And meanwhile, the official attitude of coercion and condonement is currently fixed because too many people make too much money off the prostitutes. Also Disease is a constant threat to these prostitutes. Hoewver, when one is making all these statements, there is also the feeling that we may be thrusting our sense of morals on another culture.

Finally as we were coming back to the SwarnaBhumi airport, we were happy that we had seen an ancient culture and land. But when one looked at the overall postion of women, the feelings were mixed.

(2nd part later - Ayudaya and more about the country )

THAILAND (integrated blog) - LAND OF BUDDHAS AND MASSAGES

(PLEASE NOTE THAT THE PIKS IN THE earlier version AND THIS version ALSO CAN BE ENLARGED for viewing )

In India we have always been partial to the west. We know all types of details about countries like England and America while we are woefully ignorant about the east. We do not know much about even big countries like China and Japan let alone Thailand. All I knew about it was that it was called Siam before and that it is a Buddhist country and quite liberal about sex. What I did not know was that it is as big as France and the economy is doing very well. It grows lot of rice and as for quality of life, it is somewhere in the middle. It is called a newly industrialized nation. Its politics is not clear- The absolute monarchy ended in 1932, but the country has continued as a constitutional monarchy. The king is often in the news. Military has an upper hand in the affairs of the state. Democracy has played hide and seek with the country

Our main visit was to Singapore. There are flights from major Indian cities to Bangkok with discount fares ranging from 8000 – 12000 rupees. The currency in Thailand is Baht and 100 Bahts are roughly equivalent to 120 rupees. The lodging in a middle class hotel (like the one in which we stayed ) costs about 1500 - 2000 rupees.

(1) Bangkok city

While the Bangkok airport (called SUVARNA BHOOMI – Golden land ?)is really huge, the delays for the immigration procedure (Visa fees 1000 Baht) reminded us that we were still in a developing country. The roads leading to the city were very good. Once we got off the high ways, it was like any other big Indian city. . It certainly looked like a 3rd world country in many ways but with one foot in the first world. We reached on a Monday and saw many people wearing yellow shirts. When we asked about it we found out that it is a symbol of solidarity with the monarch.

There seemed to be good public transport in the city. There were many buses on the street but we used only trains (overhead) . But trains do not connect all pats of the city as in say Singapore. Taxis are not expensive. There are also equivalents of auto rickshaws – called TukTUKs. Using them could be a problem since it is difficult to communicate. Bangkok was known as the Venice of the east but now there are only few klangs (canals) . Fast boats ply on these routes (see below). But Bangkok revels in traffic jams. It is no wonder that the drivers keep food with them all the times (Even as such people of south east asia seem to have food throughout day and night !). Thais seem to be omnivorous and it is not obvious what is vegetarian and what is not. Contrary to what it says in the bible, we did live by bread alone! People are very nice and always willing to help. But most of them do not speak English, or spoke very little. There is plenty to shop with clothes etc only slightly costlier than in India.

Bangkok is an extremely safe city. Quite a few people are on the streets in the night. It seems like this safety is shared by other cities of the east like Singapore, Tokyo etc. This type of security is not known at all in western countries and even here in India.
Part of the reason for this and for the relatively calm nature of the Thais is the message of Buddhism. One is told that even the protest political rallies are very peaceful. But this also implies docility and could be one reason that democracy is not firmly rooted here.

As we will see later and in the accompanying photographs, the foundation of Thai culture seems to be Hindu on which the Buddhist edifice stands. Before ~1000 AD the region was controlled by SriVijaya and other empires. Shrivijaya, being a Hindu empire, was possibly responsible for the strong Hindu element in Thailand’s culture. Many of the earlier sculptures and architecture are essentially Hindu. The ancestors of present Thais came over from the China region around that time . The two big kingdoms were Sukhothai and Ayutthaya. As is well known they have their own version of Ramayana . The Kings are named after Rama (The present one is called RAMA IX.) Recently Brahma seems to have caught the fancy of Thais and In a place called IRAWN shrine one can see the Brahma idol.

(2) Bangkok tourist spots

The major tourist spoit in Bangkok isthe Grand Palace area in the west of the city. There are many temples (called WATs) and pagodas in this area. The main one is the emrald Buddha shrine and the associated temples in Wat PHRA keow area,

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

-- The Wats (Pagodas ) in the Grand Palace area in the western part of Bangkok. The walls of the Palace have scenes from Ramayana. Also there is a big shrine for ' Emerald Buddha'. Many Hindu figures like Garudas and Chinese figures like dragons etc coexist on the temple walls.

Golden Reclining Buddha in WAT PO - The idol is gigantic (40 meters in length)

Following is WAT ARUN : An Angkor Wat type of temple with many many steps on the river bank

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

(3) Ayuthaaya:

Ayuthaya is about 100 km north of Bangkok. It takes 2 hours by bus or boat. We took a tour – going there by bus and coming back by boat It cost us 1600 Baht (~2000Rs) .Thailand has lot of rivers and very good irrigation which explains the fact that it is the first in the world in rice cultivation. During the bus journey we saw lots of paddy fields.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

There are several sites inthe town where you can find ruins. There are tall pagodas, stupas , hedless Buddhas - all said to be due to invasion by the Burmese (They are also Buddhists, but...)

This is a huge reclininig Buddha . Most of the Ayuthaaya buildings are from 14 - 17th Century

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Ayuthhayar kingdom began around 1350 like our Vijaynagar empire but lasted for 200 more years . Buddhism was introduced as the state religion by the first king . Many Buddhist temples were built by the subsequent kings. In the middle of the 18th century the city was ransacked by the Burmese. Around this time, the Chakri dynasty took over with RAMA I as its king.(The dynasty continues till today) . He shifted the capital to Bangkok. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Sights on the river banks -The river cruise from Ayuthaaya to Bangkok took about 3 hours and both the journey and the sights from the boat were very interesting. Was a very pleasant cruise

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

(4) Women in Thai society:

One of the first things one notices is that there seem to be more women there than in many other countries. Most of the stores are run by women. Women handle tough jobs like driving the boats on clangs ( canals – Bankok was once called the Venice of the east) . They also stand on the narrow edges of these speeding boats and give tickets as can be seen in one of the pictures. . And last but not least they manage massage parlors (see pic, more on it later) .There are massage parlors everywhere. Even one's little toes can get massaged for not a whole lot of money !

Dr Devaraja , a Sinhalese sociologist attributes the seemingly exalted position of women in the society, it to Buddhism where (a) the church was open to both sexes and (b) no particular preference for male heir since daughter is regarded as a heir and could conduct religious ceremonies including funerals etc. It is not that Masculine superiority does not exist but is tempered by Buddhist ideals. However there is also the sad aspect is that there is a large scale use of women as physical objects. Old western men accompanied by very young Thai women is a very common sight in Bangkok. They act as companions for these men. This sad state of affairs seems to have started during the Vietnam war when the country was knowingly used for ' rest and recreation'. Older men have now replaced the soldiers of yore and the pay for women in these jobs is quite high.

The massage actually came from India !

While massaging here may have its seamier aspects,

one would like to note the very fascinating connection

(pointed out by Sreenivasarao ) between Buddha and massages .

Jivaka was Buddha's personal physician and one of his innovations was the massage. When Buddhism went to Thailand, the massage also went with it.

Even today the Thai massagers start their work with an invocation to Jivaka Kumarabhaca (He is also referred to as Father Shivago). There is a figure in Bangkoks' Wat Phrom Keao which is supposed to be of a medicine man. I do not remember the name but one can see the figure in the adjoining pic. It could be that of Jivaka the great vaidya ! The invocation is as follows

We invite the spirit of our Founder, the Father Doctor Jivaka, who comes to us though his saintly life...

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Finally as we were coming back to the SwarnaBhumi airport, we were happy that we had seen an ancient culture and land. But when one looked at the overall postion of women, the feelings were mixed. The calmness of people here could also denote possible docility in important matters. This may explain why Thailand is still not a complete democracy . .

And as we entered the immigration area in the airport, we were again reminded of the Hindu element in this society.

The giant tableau at the duty free area of the airport - Devas and Asuras doing Amrit Manthan - The figures are almost size of humans !
